Awana Handbook for 2020-2021

Welcome to Awana!

It is a pleasure to have your child(ren) in Awana this year and to be part of his/her spiritual growth.

This guide is designed to give you all the information you will need to have a successful year.  If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact us any time.

Puggles, Cubbies, Sparks and T & T will meet every Wednesday evening unless otherwise noted in the bulletin or the Awana Calendar. Puggles will go directly to the nursery. Cubbies will meet in the Kinderchurch room. Sparks and T & T members should arrive a little before 6:50 pm for check-in and should meet in the fellowship hall for our opening session at 6:55.  Awana will end promptly at 8:00 and children should be picked up in their designated places.  For safety reasons, all students are required to check in at the children’s security station in the lobby. Check-in for Awana points, used quarterly in the Awana store, will be completed in the lobby for everyone except Puggles & Cubbies.  Parents and clubbers must have matching name badges for dismissal.  All children’s tags will be checked before leaving Awana.  Also, for safety reasons, we ask that parents and guardians of students remain on the church grounds during the time of club meetings.  If you bring a visitor, you become that child’s parent for the evening.

What is Awana?

Awana stands for “Approved Workmen are not Ashamed…” from II Timothy 2:15

The Awana ministry embraces five principles:

  1. Awana is centered on the Gospel.
  2. Scripture memory is a key element.
  3. Awana is exciting and fun.
  4. Children are trained to serve.
  5. Awana is built on volunteer leadership.

The Awana prayer is that all children and youth throughout the world will come to know, love and serve the Lord Jesus Christ.

Awana’s purpose is to be a strategic partner with churches and ministries in a global effort to ensure the opportunity for all children and youth to be evangelized and discipled in Christ.

 

Awana Values:

We will glorify God and serve the body of Christ by committing ourselves to these values:

  • We proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ with clarity and urgency.
  • We commit to God’s Word as our guide and standard.
  • We treat all people as created and loved by God.
  • We maintain a servant heart in all we do.
  • We manage God’s resources with faithfulness and integrity.
  • We pursue excellence as unto the Lord.

 

Key Club Scriptures:

I Corinthians 15:2-4 – “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”

John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Acts 16:31 – “And they said, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.’”

Book and Scripture requirements:

Students will be required to bring their books to Awana each week if the teacher does not keep the books.  If a student does not bring a book for two consecutive weeks, he/she will be asked to sit out of game time.  Games are an essential part of Awana; however the purpose of the program is to “Hide God’s Word in our hearts.”  A student must also use handbook time to study scripture and make an attempt to check-off at least one section each evening.  Handbook time is critical to the success of the program.  Children will not be allowed to come weekly to disturb others who are working towards their Awana goals.

Awana begins at home!

Involvement and encouragement from home are critical.  Each week, parents should strive to have their clubbers at Awana. There are also activities in each book which must be completed at home. Time is limited for parents to support their children in Bible study, so we encourage parents to make Awana a priority.

 

 

About our Clubs:

All students are divided into four groups:

  • Puggles are nursery ages birth to 2 years.
  • Cubbies are potty trained 3’s and 4’s.
  • Sparks are students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade.
  • T & T’s (Truth & Training) are students in grades 3rd through 5th.

Students in each club will be divided into small groups during handbook time to work on verses together. There will be several small groups in Sparks and in T & T during handbook time.

Cubbies will remain in their classroom during the evening.  Their schedule is as follows:

  • Coming-in Time         – Welcome Activity
  • Play Time                 – Games/Music
  • Opening Time           – Prayer and puppets
  • Story Time               – Story
  • Book Time                – Verse recital
  • Snack Time               – Snack

Sparks and T & T will change classes during the evening. Half of the evening will be used for verse practice and checking off sections in handbook time.  The other half will be used for game time. The Apple Acres Entrance Booklet, Flight 3:16 and Start Zone are the first materials students complete in the program.  Upon completion of these brochures and after attending Awana for at least 3 weeks, students will be eligible for their club vests or shirts and handbooks.

In each handbook, students are taught basic truths about God and His Word.  In order to receive awards, students are required to learn the verses and complete work in their handbooks.  Awards, badges, etc. are given out according to the pages and verses successfully completed.

 

Club Costs:

We are excited to announce that our church will provide all teaching materials, first booklets, badges, and shirts/vests.  Parents are responsible for the following:

  • Dues each week –  suggested amount is at least .50 per student
  • Missions offerings
  • Optional: Club bags

Tips on How Parents Can Help:

  • Help your child learn weekly verses.
  • Check the calendar for special events and bring your child prepared.
  • Make sure your child brings his/her Bible, dues and handbook (once they receive one), and make sure he/she wears the club uniform and tennis shoes.
  • Listen to your child recite the memory verses.
  • Be encouraging! Practice in the car.
  • Bring your child to Awana on time every week.
  • Be on time to pick up your clubber.
  • Become a listener or leader in Awana.

 Suggestions for Memorizing:

  • Repeat the verse over and over to your child.
  • Break up the verse into short phrases.
  • Explain what the verse means.
  • Show them how the verse relates to their lives.
  • Pray for the Holy Spirit to help them learn their verses.

 

Basic Rules:

  • Listen and don’t talk when a leader is talking.
  • Always raise your hand when you have something to say or want to answer a question.
  • Always be quiet and respectful during lesson time, so all students are able to hear.
  • Always keep your hands and feet to yourself. No hitting, kicking, wrestling or climbing. (Running is only permitted in games.)
  • Come to class prepared to learn.
  • Do not bring food, toys, etc. to class.

 

Discipline:

In the Awana program, we have the Three-Count and Five-Count systems.

The Five-Count is the way leaders keep meeting times orderly.  To start the Five-Count, the leader claps and raises his/her hands.  The leader then begins to count to five (slowly), while holding up the appropriate number of fingers.  As soon as the other leaders hear the count, they will stop what they are doing and raise one hand also.  All leaders will keep their hands raised until all the children around them are quiet.

The Three-Count is the order of discipline.  The leader will first try a warning.  If the clubber needs to be disciplined again, the director or coordinator will take the clubber out of the club for a 5 minute break.  The third offence will result in the clubber being removed from the club and taken to a parent for the remainder of that club meeting.

 

 

Store Points:

For the 2020-2021 year, we will continue to have store nights!  Students will redeem points from the check-in table for small toys, candy, crackers, etc.

***Parents must report to the check-in desk with their student to fill out and initial the student point cards.  If students do not check-in with a parent or guardian, they will not have points to redeem in the store.

Special Needs:

If your child has special learning needs, please let us know on the registration form.  We do have provisional learning requirements available for our special needs children.  We will also need prior knowledge to make sure we have appropriate staffing.

 

 

Dress Code:

 Tennis shoes are required for the safety of our children.  We want to prevent as many injuries as possible.  There are many relays or running events during game time.  If a clubber does not wear tennis shoes, he/she will be asked to sit out of games.  Girls should not wear dresses or skirts for modesty reasons in game time.  Shorts should also be of modest length.

COVID 19:

Due to the current pandemic, we will do our best for the safety of our students and staff with each other.  Please encourage your children to follow these guidelines for the safety of other children and staff:

  • Do not touch each other for any reason!
  • Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer frequently.
  • Leave space between yourself and others when you are walking in a line or sitting in class.
  • Wear a mask if you wish to do so.

Please REMAIN at home if you or any family member have a fever, cough, nausea or other symptoms of COVID or any other illness.

VBS 2020 – Rocky Railway

VBS has been reschedule for all summer long on Sundays!

Why have VBS for one week when we could have VBS all summer long! VBS will not be held for one week like we usually do, instead we will have VBS every Sunday morning from 11:00am – 12:15pm! Join us for Loco Motion Games, Imagination Station and Bible Adventures! Plan to board The Rocky Railway on Sunday, June 14th!

Pre-K will be a separate group and will have their own stations. Ages K-5th grade will be in 3 groups and will only be together in the FH for opening and the gym for closing and for dismissal.

Phased Reopening of In-Person Services – LATEST INFORMATION

THESE PLANS ARE LIKELY TO CHANGE AS WE MAKE PERIODIC ADJUSTMENTS BASED ON OUR EXPERIENCE AND THE ADVICE OF HEALTH OFFICIALS.  PLEASE CHECK BACK REGULARLY.

Our priority is to care for God’s people spiritually and physically.  If you are sick or vulnerable to becoming sick, please stay safe by staying home.  Everyone has different comfort levels.  We respect your decisions for your personal safety and that of your family members.



All services will continue to be live streamed through our app, Facebook, YouTube, Roku and on our website.

Here is a list of what you can expect as we reopen in-person services:

  • Reopening will be in phases.  Please see the detailed phases of reopening below.
  • Please understand that everyone has different levels of comfort.  Out of respect for those who are maintaining social distancing protocols, please do not hug or shake hands.  Staff has been asked to correct those who are not following this request.
  • Touch surfaces have and will be regularly sanitized.
  • Doors will be left propped open during entry and exit.
  • Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the building.
  • Masks are available at the reception counter.
  • Rows have been blocked off to maintain the recommended 6 ft. distancing.  At least three empty chairs are required between households. (Staff will assist everyone in being seated to maintain these standards.)  Please understand that we may occasionally ask you to change rows to help maximize safety and capacity.
  • Attendance is capped at 200.  Beginning July 5th you do not need to make reservations.
  • There will be no bulletins or peppermints at the reception counter.  Updates and information are provided through Facebook, the Sanctuary app and online.
  • Tithes and offerings will be collected in special drop boxes located in the lobby and entrance to the main auditorium.  We encourage online giving at give.mysanctuary.org.
  • Attendees are asked to please not congregate in the building.  If you wish to speak to others, please do so in the parking lot while maintaining social distancing.

Summer Program Updates

  • VBS has been rescheduled for all summer long on Sundays, 11am starting June 14th.  Register at events.mysanctuary.org.
  • Summer Camp has been cancelled.  The host camp could not accommodate our group this year.  Refunds have been made to those who previously registered.
  • The Forward Conference in Atlanta has been cancelled.  There is a possibility there will be a telecast event at the church.  We will keep you updated as we get more information.
  • The Guatemala Mission Trip  has been cancelled.  Refunds will be made.
